Born in Figueres in 1904, Salvador Dalí was a Catalan painter, sculptor, engraver, scriptwriter and writer of Spanish nationality who died in the city of his birth in 1989. He is considered one of the main representatives of surrealism and is one of the most famous painters of the twentieth century.
After art studies in Madrid, Dalí went to Paris where he joined the group of surrealists, a movement which he was excluded from a few years later. He left France for New York during World War II.
Recurrent themes in Dalí’s oeuvre are the dream, sexuality, the edible, his wife Gala, and religion.
Two museums were devoted to him in his lifetime, the Salvador Dalí Museum in St. Petersburg (US) and the Dalí Theatre-Museum in Figueras (ES).
