Born in Belgium in 1922 to Dutch parents, Corneille, the pseudonym of Guillaume Cornelis Beverloo, was a Dutch painter, etcher, sculptor and ceramic artist who died in 2010.
Corneille studied at the School of Fine Arts of Amsterdam. He began exhibiting in 1946, then discovered surrealism. He was one of the initiators of the Cobra movement (1948–1951) with Karel Appel, Constant Nieuwenhuis, Asger Jorn and Christian Dotremont.
After the dissolution of the Cobra group in 1951, Corneille evolved towards abstraction. However, he returned to figurative art in the early 1960s, recovering the expressionist and impassioned idiom of the Cobra period.
The figures of the woman, bird, sun, snake and cat feature prominently in his later works, which were imbued with lyricism.
